Versailles, at US 50 and SR 421, the Ripley County seat, is where the Ripley County Courthouse is located with Circuit and Superior courts as well as other county offices. A beautiful war monument adorns the courthouse lawn paying respect to those who fought for our freedom. Inside you will find the Ripley County History Tree full of the county’s rich past.
James Tyson, co-founder of the Walgreen Pharmacy chain, was a native of Versailles and left his legacy by building a gymnasium, library, and Tyson United Methodist Church. A foundation created in his name has contributed to many projects in the community since his death in 1941.
The Ripley County Sheriff’s Department, and Indiana State Police Post building are located in Versailles.
The Annual Memorial Day Parade, Chicken Barbecue in June, Fourth of July Fireworks and Pumpkin Show in September bring people together from all over. The Versailles State Park, just east of town on U.S. 50 draws over 400,000 people a year for camping, swimming, hiking, horseback riding, and more.
The Ripley County Historical Society is well known for its archives, historical information, and museum. Many historical homes and buildings line the Versailles streets, including the Fernando G. Taylor House (where the Ripley County Tourism Bureau office is located) and Tyson United Methodist Church, which are both on the National Register of Historic Places. Signs for Morgan’s Raid are located on and near the square to mark the famous raid of 1863, and a driving tour of the raid is available at the Tourism Office, across from the courthouse.
Businesses include several restaurants, flower and gift shops, a library, variety stores and more. Ohio Rod Products is the largest industry in Versailles.
